Taxonomy Identification: Family Nymphalidae, first named by Linnaeus in 1767
Colour: Topside (recto) is predominantly dark brownish black, with deep orange ocherous wing edge, divided by black-scaled veins. The underside (verso) is mosaic in appearance, traversed by a jumble of bands and of brown, reddish, greyish and blackish patches, all edged with a filigree of white.
Size: Wingspan 75-100mm
Comments & Applications: An absolutely stunning European butterfly, found throughout the Mediterranean coast from west Portugal to the coastal islands of Greece. It also occurs into the middle east Turkey into Israel. It is the only European species of the genus Charaxes and greatly prized among collectors.
Very popular with the trade due to its bright colours, ideal for butterfly framing, domes, artwork, photography, interior design, film and reference collections.
