Taxonomy Identification: Family Nymphalidae. First named by Keferstein in 1851
Colour: The topside (recto) wings on both sexes are orange, with various patterns and rows of black spots and bars. The underside (verso) forewings similar to topside, verso hind-wings a mixture of cream, white and black spots and dashes.
Size: Wingspan 28-34 mm
Comments & Applications: A more local species found in meadow habitats across south-western Europe south-western Europe, parts of the Italian Alps, Germany and Switzerland. One for the serious reference collector.
