Taxonomy Identification: Family Sphingidae, First named by Westwood in 1847
Colour: Forewing base colour dark brown with lighter brown and black patterns. Hints of dark blue and cream, with a single small white spot in centre of wing. Hind wing yellow and black outer edge. Abdomen yellow with central vertical blue line and black horizontal bars. Thorax has skull like marking.
Size: Wingspan 80-110 mm
Comments & Applications: A member of the famous “Deaths Head” hawk moth family made famous through book and film “silence of the Lambs” where this moth appears. The thorax carries a skull like pattern, hence the common name “death” or “deaths head” moth. This species is extremely popular among the art and craft industry for interior design work, frames or domes. Also a great subject for photography or film, entertainment and educational purposes.
