Taxonomy Identification: Family Nymphalidae, first named by Linnaeus in 1758
Colour: Topside (recto) is predominantly orange with black and yellow bars or patches running along the top edge of the forewing ending in a small white patch. Outer wing margins have rows of blue spots/dashes edged in black. The hind-wing is black and orange. The underside (verso) is black with pale orange patch on forewing.
Size: Wingspan 45-62mm
Comments & Applications: One of Britains most-familiar butterflies, appearing in gardens throughout the British Isles oftentimes feeding on Buddleih.
Very popular with the trade due to its bright colours, ideal for butterfly framing, domes, artwork, photography, interior design, film and reference collections.
Format: Unmounted papered requires relaxing and setting.
