Description

Taxonomy Identification: Family Satyridae, first named by Linnaeus in 1758

Colour: The topside (recto) of the male butterfly is dark brown with two pairs of small black spots positioned on each wing, each spot faintly ringed in pale orange. The female is similar but the rings are larger. The underside of both sexes is brown with rows of large black eye spots circled in yellowish-orange with a white centre dash/spot.

Size: Wingspan 40-52mm

Comments & Applications: At first sight this butterfly looks rather drab, that is until you see the underside which has the beautiful rows of eye spots from which comes its English common name, the Ringlet Butterfly. A widespread species found across the UK and Europe. Dried butterflies make the perfect subject for school science projects or taxonomic reference collections. Also for framing, domes, photography, interior design and film applications.
