Taxonomy Identification: Family Pieridae. First named by Linnaeus in 1758
Colour: The topside (recto) of box sexes is white with black veins. Male has prominent black dash on forewing which is less prominent in the female. Females also have heavier marked black veins and the underside (verso) hindwing is off white almost cream. On some females the wings appear almost transparent due to the loss of wing scales through the rubbing of wings.
Size: Wingspan 51-69mm
Comments & Applications: A common European species, First listed as a British species in 1667, this species became extinct in the British Isles around 1925 with its last remaining stronghold in the south-east of England. Commonly known as the Black Vein White butterfly. Dried butterflies make the perfect subject for collectors, school science projects. Also for framing, domes, photography, interior design and film applications.
