Taxonomy Identification: Family Nymphalidae. First named by Linnaeus in 1758
Colour: This butterfly produces two colour forms; spring and summer respectively. The spring form levana primarily orange in colour, giving them the appearance of a small fritillary, whereas the summer form prorsa look more like a very small White Admiral.
Size: Wingspan 28-40mm
Comments & Applications: A widespread species, across Europe but absent from Britain despite several attempts at introducing this species over the past 100 years. Commonly known as the Map butterfly due to the butterflies latticed map-like markings. Popular among collectors and ideal for photographic, art and design projects.
