Taxonomy Identification: Family Saturniidae, First named by Guerin-Meneville, in 1847
Colour: Overall colour yellow with a twin chain of reddish-brown pyramid shapes on the forewings with a darker patch at the tip of wings. Each wing has a large moon-like shape. Underside similar but paler.
Size: Wingspan 120-145mm – Trailing tails in males up to 200mm long.
Comments & Applications: One of the most magnificent of all insects. The huge Comet Moth or Madagascar Moon moth. Females have broader wings and shorter tails, while males have very long elegant tails. A must-have collectable and extremely popular in the trade for butterfly framing, domes, artwork, photography, interior design and film
Format: Unmounted, papered, wings folded, requires relaxing and setting – Please note, because these are large-bodied moths, they can sometimes have traces of mould or grease that can be removed easily with degreasing fluid. Always relax these large insects in their packaging. DO NOT try removing while dry as the tails are extremely fragile and easily broken. Follow dehydration instructions supplied with your specimen.
