Comments & Applications: This butterfly is widespread across Europe frequenting higher altitudes. For a long time in Britain this butterfly was identified as a sub-species of the brown argus (Aricia agestis). It is now confirmed as a separate species with two unique sub-species named as artaxerxes in Scotland and salmacis in northern England. A scarce and local species in Britain, prized by collectors.
