Description

Taxonomy Identification: Family Nymphalidae. First named by Denis & Schiffermüller, in 1775.

Colour: Topside wings are brownish-orange with latticed black lines and spots. The underside (verso) forewings are orange with black spots and dashes. Wing tips terminate in a darker purple-brown patch. The verso hind-wings are intricately patterned in various shades of brown/black with a series of “pearl” spots and bordered in pearl.

Size: Wingspan 35-44 mm

Comments & Applications:  An uncommon species in Britain, isolated in England and Wales to scattered colonies in the south-west. More widespread in central Scotland. Outside of Britain this butterfly is found throughout Europe and North America. A beautiful butterfly prized by collectors. We are pleased to offer captive bred and antique examples.
