Taxonomy Identification: Family Nymphalidae. First named by Rottemburg, in 1775
Colour: The topside (recto) wings on both sexes are orange, with various patterns and rows of black spots and bars. The underside (verso) forewing is pale orange with black markings, while the verso hindwing has a latticed pattern showing brown-edged beige blotches and violet patches.
Size: Wingspan 34-42 mm
Comments & Applications: This beautiful orange and black fritillary butterfly is absent from Britain but widespread across Europe into Asia.
