Taxonomy Identification: Family Lycaenidae, First named by Linnaeus in 1758
Colour: Topside (recto) of male violet blue. Female blue with broad black tips.Underside (verso) of both sexes similar, silver-white, in the disc a row of black dots, some of which are elongate, and before the margin blackish shadowy dots.
Size: Wingspan 26-34mm
Comments & Applications: The Holly Blue is widespread in Europe. Restricted to the southern half of the United Kingdom, often frequenting gardens in Spring looking for ivy or holly buds on which the ova are laid. A collectable reference species, useful for school and educational purposes.
Conservation: British specimens are either captive bred or from antique collections
NOTE: Small Lycaenidae are notoriously difficult to taxidermy – not recommended for beginners.
