Taxonomy Identification: Family Satyridae. First named by Borkhausen, in 1788

Colour: Forewing of the male on the upperside washed with copper-brown, of the female with yellowish brown. Hindwing uniformly blackish brown. Underside forewings reddish chestnut with grey border, hind-wings greyish-green dusting with small eye spots and cream patch. Variable colouration depending on location, several sub-species. Female similar but larger.

Size: Wingspan 26-30 mm

Comments & Applications:  Well distributed from Eastern Europe to Siberia and the Caucasus to North Korea. A lovely species with rich chestnut orange on the hind-wings.  Commonly known as the Chestnut Heath butterfly. An unusual and seldom offered species.
