Taxonomy Identification: Family Satyridae. First named by Muller in 1764
Colour: Males have golden brown forewings, with two small black eyespots and a faint cream bar. The hind-wings are greyish with more two larger more prominent eye markings and a pale cream patch. Females are generally darker with less prominent markings.
Size: Wingspan 35-38 mm
Comments & Applications: This is a holarctic butterfly found in northern Europe and Asia and across North America. Commonly known in England as the Large Heath butterfly it is found in the north of the British Isles, confined to boggy heath areas.
