Description
Taxonomy Identification: Family Lycaenidae. First named by Rottemburg in 1775
Colour: The wings of the male topside (recto) are a deep blue with black borders and white fringes. The female topside is brown. The underside of wings on both sexes is greyish or ocher, with a series of black spots surrounded by white and a blue scaling in the basal area.
Size: Wingspan 28-38 mm
Comments & Applications: This butterfly is widespread in Europe stretching across to Siberia, North Africa, and the Middle East. First mentioned as British in 1710 with several hundred sightings recorded up until 1904. Due to a change in haymaking and the cutting of the larval food plant (clover) during immature stages, the species is now extinct in Britain. Rarely offered for sale, we are pleased to offer European examples.
