Taxonomy Identification: Family Nymphalidae, First named by Boisduval in 1836
Colour: The topside (recto) wings have a white base colour covered in fine black sinuous lines and ochraceous bars. At the base of the hind-wing is a shaded ochraceous patch. Underside wings (verso) similar, topside markings showing through by transparency.
Size: Wingspan 55-65mm
Comments & Applications: An amazing patterned butterfly with intricate black lines on white background giving this butterfly its common name “Map” butterfly. A very popular species used widely in butterfly art, wall hangings, framing, domes, artwork, photography, interior design/craft, film, science and educational applications.
