Taxonomy Identification: Family Nymphalidae, First named by Linnaeus in 1758.
Colour: Topside (recto) orange with black tips with white bar and smaller white spots. Hind-wing variable between sub-species, the hind wing is is cream, orange with black. Underside (verso) similar but paler.
Size: Wingspan 55-70mm
Comments & Applications: A widespread species found across Arabia, Africa, Tropical Asia, AU, Canary Island, India, Ceylon and Burma. Commonly called the African Monarch, African Queen or Plain Tiger, It is believed this species is one of the first to depicted in art.
