Taxonomy Identification: Family Lycaenidae. First named by Cramer in 1775.
Colour: Male topside (recto) is blue, with white bar on the hindwing, black margins. The female is coloured dark brownish-black with faint white central bar. The underside (verso) of box sexes is similar, black with central white bar, hind wings bordered in black elongated spots circled in iridescent green-blue with an additional green-blue marginal bar.
Size: Wingspan 38-45mm
Comments & Applications: A small delicate species, quite rare and one for the serious collector. Commonly called the large green-banded blue. Dried butterflies make the perfect subject for school science projects. Also framing, domes photography, interior design and film applications.
