Description

Taxonomy Identification: Family Hesperiidae. First named by Linnaeus in 1758

Colour: A brown butterfly, its forewings have faint greyish-silver markings, the hind-wings are plain brown apart from faint tiny cream spots. The underside (verso) wings are similar but paler in colour.

Size: Wingspan 24-29 mm

Comments & Applications:  A widespread but local butterfly found across the whole of Britain with its main strongholds in central and southern England. The butterfly get’s its common name “dingy” from its lacklustre and drab moth-like appearance. However this butterfly’s silvery-brown colouration provides excellent camouflage when at rest. Outside of England this species is widely distributed from Europe into, Pakistan, China and East Asia.
