Taxonomy Identification: Family Nymphalidae, first named by Staudinger in 1891
Colour: Topside (recto) wings black with large areas of pale to dark blue. Female has a white bar at the apex while the bar is often more yellow in the male. Topside hind-wing almost all blue with black dotted edge. The underside (verso) base colour varies from brown to olive brown. The forewing verso has various black spots and a white bar at the apex. The verso hind-wing top edge has a long curved white marginal bar with a row of black spots at the lower margin, faint in the male.
Size: Wingspan 70-85mm
Comments & Applications: A beautiful African butterfly not often offered for sale. Commonly called the preussi forester butterfly. A collectable species and also popular for framing, domes, artwork, photography, interior design and film.
