Taxonomy Identification: Family Nymphalidae, first named by Hecq in 1979

Colour: Topside (recto) wings black with blue patches on the female, male has pale orange patch on forewing apex. Topside hind-wings carry large blueish-orange patches, more blue in the female. The underside (verso) forewing is olive with various black spots, stripes and a pale orange patch at wing apex. Hind-wing verso buff-orange with black spots/dashes and a row of black marginal spots edged greenish olive. At the thoracic centre of the wings is a bright pink patch.

Size: Wingspan 70-85mm

Comments & Applications: A beautiful African butterfly not often offered for sale. Commonly called the Large True forester butterfly. A rare collectable species and also popular for framing, domes, artwork, photography, interior design and film.
