Taxonomy Identification: Family Nymphalidae. First named by Lederer in 1853
Colour: The adult butterflies usually show a chequered pattern of brown, orange, and yellow markings. Submarginal band of the hindwing is of a magnificent deep russet-red colour and nearly occupies the whole outer half of the wing. The underside (verso) of the wings is patterned with strong colours of yellow, orange, and brown.
Size: Wingspan 39-48 mm
Comments & Applications: This is a stunning sub-species limited to Middle Atlas, Rif Mountains, Portugal and Algarve. A beautiful butterfly prized by collectors. We are pleased to offer captive bred and antique examples.
