Taxonomy Identification: Family Nymphalidae, Hubner 1806
Colour: Topside (recto) a beautiful calico pattern with submarginal eye-spots (ocelli) on the hind-wings. The underside (verso) forewings black and white patched, hind-wings are coloured a deep orange-yellow.
Size: Wingspan 65-75mm
Comments & Applications: A stunning butterfly, Hamadryas species have the common name “crackers” due to the ability of males in several species to produce a sound similar to the crackling of bacon in a frying pan!
