Taxonomy Identification: Family Heliconiinae, First named by Boisduval in 1870
Colour: Black with red patch on forewing and yellow bar on hindwing
Size: Wingspan 60-70+mm
Comments & Applications: A beautiful “mimic” butterfly easily confused with Heliconius erato. One distinguishing feature is that in H.erato the yellowish-white stripe on the underside (verso) reaches the margin of the hindwing but ends before reaching the margin in H.melpomene. Commonly called the Postman butterfly. A very popular species with the art and design trade. Perfect for framing, closeup photography, interior design, film, entertainment or educational purposes.
