Taxonomy Identification: Family Heliconiinae, First named by Hewitson in 1853
Colour: Black with orange patch on forewing. This sub-species lacks the yellow patch on the hind-wing.
Size: Wingspan 60-70+mm
Comments & Applications: A beautiful “mimic” butterfly easily confused with Heliconius erato. One distinguishing feature is that in H. erato the yellowish-white stripe on the underside (verso) reaches the margin of the hindwing but ends before reaching the margin in H. melpomene. Commonly called the Postman butterfly. A very popular species with the art and design trade. Perfect for framing, closeup photography, interior design, film, entertainment or educational purposes.
