Taxonomy Identification: Family Nymphalidae, First named by Linnaeus in 1758
Colour: Sexually dimorphic. Male topside (recto) wings of the male are black with white patches circled in purple-blue, absent in the females. Females highly vaiable, some black with cream margin, others have both blue and orange patches. Underside wings (verso) of both sexes are blackish-brown with blueish white markings, lines and patches.
Size: Wingspan 75-85mm
Comments & Applications: A widespread and popular species, highly variable between sub-species. The male carries the “blue moon” markings which give this butterfly its common name, also known as the Great Egg fly butterfly. Useful in science, education, butterfly framing, domes, artwork, photography, interior design and film
