Taxonomy Identification: Family Nymphalidae, first named by Linnaeus in 1758
Colour:The wings are a rusty red, and each wingtip bears a distinctive, black, blue and yellow eyespot. The underside is a cryptically coloured dark brown or black.
Size: Wingspan 45-55mm
Comments & Applications: A familiar sight in gardens across the British Isles and is unmistakable, with quite spectacular eyes on the topside of the hind-wings that give this butterfly its name. Widespread throughout Europe, across Russia into the far East and Japan.
