Description

Taxonomy Identification: Family Papilionidae. First named by Linnaeus 1758

Colour: Topside wings pale yellow with thick black stripes. The hind-wing has an orange and black patch at its base centred with a iridescent blue line. Crescent shaped lines of blue line the hind-wing margins. This species has long trailing “tails” – Underside (verso) similar but paler.

Size: Wingspan 53-80 mm

Comments & Applications:  A widespread European species, stretching into Arabia, Asia, Pakistan, India and western China. The scarcity of migrants to England is responsible for the English vernacular name “Scarce Swallowtail”.  As one of Europe’s largest butterflies this is an impressive and popular species.
