Taxonomy Identification: Family Lycaenidae. First named by Cramer in 1775
Colour: The topside (recto) wings of the male are pale blue with black margins and black spots on lower hind-wings. The underside (verso) wings are pale brown with lighter cream dashed lines. At the end of the hindwing is a black spot circled in orange.
Size: Wingspan 20-25mm
Comments & Applications: A small delicate species, widespread but collectable, known as the common Caerulean butterfly. Dried butterflies make the perfect subject for school science projects. Also for framing, domes, photography, interior design and film applications.
NOTE: Small Lycaenidae are notoriously difficult to taxidermy – not recommended for beginners.
