Lampides boeticus LONG TAILED-BLUE

Description

Taxonomy Identification: Family Lycaenidae. First named by Linnaeus in 1767

Colour: Sexually dimorphic. Male topside wings are blue with thin grey-black outer border and small black eye spots at the apex of the hindwing. Compared to the males, the females topside forewings have a more vivid shimmering violet blue patch and much thicker black border. Female hind-wings are a paler blue and have a faint row of pale cream dashes ending in black eye spots. Both sexes have a single thin “tail” on each hind-wing and the underside (verso) is a pale greyish brown with intricate rows of cream dashes ending in black eye spots with blue and orange surround.

Size: Wingspan 24-35 mm

The butterfly has thin “tails” on the hind-wings hence its common name the Long Tailed blue butterfly. A scarce species, rarely offered for sale, fresh captive bred stock.
