Taxonomy Identification: Family Lycaenidae. First named by Linnaeus in 1767
Colour: Sexually dimorphic. Male topside wings are blue with thin grey-black outer border and small black eye spots at the apex of the hindwing. Compared to the males, the females topside forewings have a more vivid shimmering violet blue patch and much thicker black border. Female hind-wings are a paler blue and have a faint row of pale cream dashes ending in black eye spots. Both sexes have a single thin “tail” on each hind-wing and the underside (verso) is a pale greyish brown with intricate rows of cream dashes ending in black eye spots with blue and orange surround.
Size: Wingspan 24-35 mm
Comments & Applications: The Long-tailed Blue is an extremely rare migrant to the British Isles, but widespread and often common in Europe its distribution stretching in Africa, and Asia. The butterfly has thin “tails” on the hind-wings hence its common name the Long Tailed blue butterfly. A scarce species, rarely offered for sale, fresh captive bred stock.
