Description

Taxonomy Identification: Family Satyridae. First named by Linnaeus in 1758

Colour: Topside (recto) reddish orange with latticed black markings and bars. The forewing tip has a single black eye spot (ocelli) centred with white, while the hind-wings have a row of three eye spots. The underside forewings are a tan orange colour with single eye spot, while the hind-wings are buff with intricate patterns and eye spots.

Size: Wingspan 45-53 mm

Comments & Applications:  Widespread across Europe in North Africa and the middle East. Much rarer in Britain and sadly in decline due to habitat loss. Now confined to primarily-coastal regions in south-east England and Scotland. Absent from the far north. A scarce species, rarely offered for sale.
