Description
Taxonomy Identification: Family Nymphalidae, first named by Linnaeus in 1767
Colour: Topside (recto) is predominantly dark brownish black, with pale white patches and faint black/blue marginal line. The hind-wing has a line of faint white, the margin has an orange border lined with black dashes and hint of blue. The underside (verso) is light red-brown, with a grey-greenish tint, the margin of both wings greenish grey with a black undulate line, and near it two rows of black spots. The hind-wing verso is more or less grey-green, there being some black transverse bars in the anterior half of the basal area.
Size: Wingspan 70-80mm
Comments & Applications: A large and impressive European butterfly, found throughout Europe but scarce due to the clearing of forests containing larval trees that they must feed on to survive, and replacement with more economically valuable conifer forests. It also occurs east into Russia and China.
A popular species among entomologists, ideal for butterfly framing, domes, artwork, photography, interior design, film and reference collections.
Format: Choose either SET with wings spread mounted on a pin with locational data OR papered unmounted wings folded needs relaxing and setting
