The Large Copper Butterfly
Sadly a species in decline in Europe and extinct in England. First found in the England in 1749 at Dozens Bank near Spalding Lincolnshire. This subspecies (batavus) originally from Holland has been bred in captivity by a number of dedicated breeders and at Woodwalton Fen Cambridgeshire for several decades. These examples are captive bred from stock prior to 1993 E.P.S.

Taxonomy Identification: Family Lycaenidae. First named by Haworth, in 1802
Colour: A sexually dimorphic species. Male butterflies have a copper orange topside (recto), with small black spots on forewing and thin black wing margins. The male hind-wing is also bright orange with black crescent shape marking and thin outer black edge. The female topside (recto) is orange with black spots on the forewing and broad black margin. The hind-wing is dark blackish with an orange margin and thin black edge. The underside (verso) forewings are a pale orange-brown with black spots, the hind-wing is blueish-grey with rows of tiny black spots terminating in a bright orange margin.
Size: Wingspan 34-38 mm
Comments & Applications: This butterfly inhabits forest edges, swampy and damp meadows, clearings and river banks, at an elevation of 400–1,800 across northern and eastern Europe, absent from Britain. A stunning and beautiful butterfly with purple copper sheen. Cabinet specimens are seldom offered for sale, our stock is all captive bred or from antique collections.
