Taxonomy Identification: Family Lycaenidae. First named by Linnaeus, in 1758
Colour: This butterfly produces various colour forms. Male butterflies have a copper orange topside (recto), with black wing margins and black spots. The hindwing is dark blackish with a shimmering violet gloss and orange wing margin. The female topside (recto) is similar but with smaller black forewing markings. The underside (verso) forewings are a pale orange-brown with black spots, the hind-wing is tan brown with border or orange indented with white and black triangles.
Size: Wingspan 24-29 mm
Comments & Applications: This butterfly is found at higher elevations from the Pyrenees to northern Norway and from Belgium east across the Palearctic to Central Asia and Siberia. Absent from Britain. A stunning and beautiful butterfly, an uncommon species, seldom offered for sale.
