Taxonomy Identification: Family Nymphalidae, first named by Nickerl in 1850
Colour: Topside (recto) is predominantly dark brown and orange brown, with the orange-brown spots delineated by dark brown; there is a tiny white fringe on the margins. The underside (verso) shows bands of orange and off-white, with red spotted centres.
Size: Wingspan 25-33mm
Comments & Applications: This is widespread but local butterfly found across central into Eastern Europe. Rarely offered for sale and highly collectable. Also ideal for butterfly framing, domes, artwork, photography, interior design, film and reference collections.
