Taxonomy Identification: Family Nymphalidae. First named by Esper, 1778
Colour: Bright orange-brown with dark brown markings arranged in rows sometimes the colour of the females is a duller orange, shaded with grey-green. The underside of the wings is chequered pale yellow and pale orange. The male is fiery red, is chequered pale yellow and pale orange.
Size: Wingspan 35-50 mm
Comments & Applications: A widespread butterfly throughout southern Europe, into North Africa the middle East and central Asia. Absent from Britain. We are pleased to offer captive bred and antique examples.
