Description

Taxonomy Identification: Family Lycaenidae. First named by Linnaeus, in 1758

Colour: A sexually dimorphic butterfly. The male topside (recto) wings are dark with a glossy purple sheen. European examples may be much more brown often lacking the purple gloss. Females topside (recto) are dark brown-black with vivid purple patch on the forewing. Both sexes have short stubby “tails” to the hindwing margin. The underside (verso) is a light grey with a white streak, edged in black with orange spots rest at the base on the “tails”.

Size: Wingspan 26-38 mm

Comments & Applications:  This butterfly is widespread across Europe into North Africa. In the British Isles it is found across southern England and Wales, with scattered colonies further north. An absolutely stunning species, commonly called the Purple Hairstreak due to the vivid purple patch on the female or glossy purple sheen of the male. We are very pleased to offer pristine captive bred examples.
