Taxonomy Identification: Family Nymphalidae. First named by Scopoli in 1763
Colour: The topside (recto) is black with thick white bar which runs across forward and lower wings. The underside (verso) is similar but with a reddish brown back ground.
Size: Wingspan 40-46mm
Comments & Applications: A butterfly of Alpine valleys found in north Italy and eastwards into the Balkans, Russia, Asia and far East. Dried butterflies make the perfect subject for school science projects. Also for framing, domes, photography, interior design and film applications.
