Taxonomy Identification: Family Nymphalidae, first named by Linnaeus in 1758
Colour: Topside (recto) is predominantly dark brownish black, with blue marginal dashes and cream edge to the wings. The underside (verso) is black with pale cream edge.
Size: Wingspan 75-100mm
Comments & Applications: The Camberwell Beauty is a rare migrant to the British Isles, originating in Scandinavia and mainland Europe. Abundant in the USA where it is called the Mourning Cloak butterfly. Greatly prized among collectors.
Very popular with the trade due to its bright colours, ideal for butterfly framing, domes, artwork, photography, interior design, film and reference collections.
