Taxonomy Identification: Family Papilionidae, Troidini. First named by Wallace in 1859
Colour: The upperside (recto) forewings of the male are velvety black with vivid burnt orange border stripes. The hindwings are iridescent orange with yellow patches and chain of small black spots. The female is dark brown with various pale white patterns and streaks on the forewings and yellow-white on the hindwing.
Size: Wingspan up to 150-190mm (female larger)
Comments & Applications: This stunning birdwing is among the largest species of butterfly in the world. The species conservation status is listed as “near threatened”. Our specimens are captive bred on specialist breeding farms, or from antique collections. Across the butterflies range there are several sub-species. We do not sell wild caught birdwing’s.
This is a butterfly for the serious connoisseur, commonly called Wallace’s Golden birdwing. Also useful in high end applications where the customer is looking for something different from the norm.
