Taxonomy Identification: Family Papilionidae, Troidini. First named by Rothschild & Jordan, 1901.
Colour: the topside (recto) forewings of the female are dark brownish black with white patterns. The male base colour is black with iridescent green and golden-yellow wing tips, while the hindwing is coloured a brilliant golden yellowish green with thin black border.
Size: Wingspan up to 140-180mm (female larger)
Comments & Applications: This stunning bird-wing is among the largest species of butterfly in the world. The species conservation status is listed as “vulnerable”. Our specimens are captive bred on specialist breeding farms, or from antique collections. Across the butterflies range there are several sub-species. We do not sell wild caught birdwing’s.
This is a butterfly for the serious connoisseur, with the highly esteemed name the Queen Victoria birdwing. Also useful in high end applications where the customer is looking for something different from the norm.
