Taxonomy Identification: Family Papilionidae. First named by Linnaeus in 1758
Colour: Topside wings are yellow with black latticed bars and lines. The hind-wing is also yellow with a blackish-grey outer wing margin inlaid with blue and ending in a prominent red eye spot. Each hindwing has a trailing “tail” The underside (verso) is similar but paler with more red/blue on the verso hind-wing.
Size: Wingspan 80-95 mm
Comments & Applications: A beautiful North American species, distributed in the eastern United States, ranging north to southern Ontario, Canada. Captive bred specimens, lovely collectors species also perfect for framing, domes, interior design, or close up photography and artwork.
