Taxonomy Identification: Family Mantidae, First named by De Han in 1842
Colour: The female Mantid’s body, legs and forewings are dark brown. The hind-wings are black with dark brown tips. Colours are similar in the male but less pronounced with semi-transparent forewings. Males also lack the black hindwing and are coloured a uniform brown.
Size: Length measuring from the tip of the head to the end of the abdomen but excluding the legs and antenna: Male 48-50mm Wingspan 74-80mm, Female 60-65mm Wingspan 68-74mm
Comments & Applications: Commonly called the Ghost mantid because of its incredible shape and facial features. More recently called the “darth vader” Mantid due to the extra large appendage to the thorax resembling the Star Wars villain. In reality this Mantid resembles a leaf, possessing a camouflaged appearance perfect for hunting.
A seldom offered species and always popular among collectors. Also deal subject for artwork, photography, framing, interior design, film, entertainment or educational purposes
