Taxonomy Identification: Family Lycaenidae. First named by Denis & Schiffermüller in 1775
Colour: The topside (recto) wings on both sexes are dark brown edged with orange, but less distinct in the male. The underside (verso) wings are buff brown, with cream spots centred in black with an outer row of orange. The hindwing has two central cream patches or streaks.
Size: Wingspan 25-30 mm
Comments & Applications: This butterfly is widespread across Europe frequenting higher altitudes. Relatively common in Britain distributed south of Yorkshire into southern England and across into Wales.
