Description

Taxonomy Identification: Family Lycaenidae. First named by Bergsträsser, in 1779)

Colour: Sexually dimorphic. The topside (recto) of the wings is violet-blue in males, with a narrow, black border and a white fringe, while in the females it is dark brown, with black bordered orange spots at the outer edge, especially visible on the hind-wings. Females are especially variable coloration from dark black-blue to a more vivid blue. The underside (verso) of both sexes is light beige with several black spots surrounded by white, an orange stripe and a marginal series of black spots pupillated in silvery blue-green.

Size: Wingspan 28-35 mm

This butterfly is named after Jacques-Louis Reverdin who dedicated much of his later years to the study of butterflies. A beautiful and attractive species, popular among collectors and artists.
