Description

Taxonomy Identification: Family Hesperiidae. First named by Linnaeus in 1758

Colour: The base colour of the topside (recto) wings in box sexes is brown. All four wings are covered in tiny cream-white spots and dashes with black and white wing margins. The underside (verso) is similar but paler.

Size: Wingspan 20-24 mm

Comments & Applications:  A widespread but local butterfly in England confined to colonies stretching south from North Lincolnshire and west into Wales. The butterfly get’s its common name “grizzled” from the black and white pattern on the wings.

Outside of England this butterfly is widespread in Western Europe into northern Scandinavia, parts of Greece, and some of the Mediterranean Islands. A dainty and beautiful butterfly. We are pleased to offer captive bred examples.
