Description

Taxonomy Identification: Family Satyridae. First named by Linnaeus in 1771

Colour: Dark brown with vibrant orange markings and a single eye spot on forewing. Underside similar but with pale cream-white markings on hindwing. The male has a dark patch on the upper side of the forewing that contains scent-producing scales known as the androconia.

Size: Wingspan 37-48 mm

Comments & Applications:  A common and widespread butterfly found throughout England and Wales but absent in Scotland. A lovely species with contrasting brown and orange markings. Commonly known as the Gatekeeper or Hedge Brown butterfly.
