Taxonomy Identification: Family Nymphalidae, sub-family Brassolidae. First named by Cramer in 1775
Colour: The topside (recto) wings are brown with a broad bright orange bar, hindwings brown with a thiner orange line. The underside (verso) is coloured shades of brown with intricate black pencil lines patterns and two “owlet” markings.
Size: Wingspan Male 90-100 – Female 100-115mm
Comments & Applications: Brassolines are among the largest Neotropical butterflies, with large eyespots resembling vertebrate eyes in their wings. Commonly known as the Cassiope Owlet butterfly. A rare butterfly one for the serious connoisseur, also useful in high end bespoke applications.
