Taxonomy Identification: Family Nymphalidae, Amathusiini. First named by Fruhstorfer, in 1904.
Colour: Topside (recto) brown with large eye marking on hind wing surrounded with white patch. The (verso) underside is similar but with two large eye markings on hindwing.
Size: Wingspan 70-80mm
Comments & Applications: A spectacular species with amazing eye like wing markings, commonly known as the Urania Owl butterfly. The “eyes” act as a detractor to predators such as birds. A popular species with collectors and the framing, domes, artwork, photography, interior design and film industry
