Description
(Aglia tau – Linnaeus) Wingspan 65-75mm. A small European silkmoth flying early in Spring with day-flying males. Nicely marked and with attractive green larvae which are quite slow growing. We have best results when sleeved outdoors on growing foodplants (sycamore, Birch, Oak, Lime) Unlike most silkmoths this species pupates on or just under the soil surface, normally spinning a very loose cocoon between soil and curled up leaves. Watch out for the wandering larva showing signs of pupation! Place larva in boxes with substrate. Allow them to pupate and do not disturb for around 10 days. They can then be moved to winter hibernating quarters. Keep pupae in cool garage/shed or indoors in fridge. Bring out in late March/April and place in emergence cage. We use the pop-up cages for emergence and pairings.
